SP WBM Lube
SP WBM Lube
SP WBM Lube is an ester-based lubricant concentrate developed for water-based drilling fluids. Its combination of fatty acid methyl esters and compatible surface-active components is designed to disperse into the mud system and improve metal-to-metal and metal-to-formation lubricity.
Principal applications
- Freshwater and low-salinity water-based drilling muds
- Saltwater and brine-based mud systems after compatibility testing
- Vertical, directional and extended-reach drilling programs
- High-torque or high-drag intervals
- Stuck-pipe risk management and spotting-fluid development
- Drilling-fluid formulations where ester-based lubrication is preferred
Performance benefits
- Helps reduce friction between drillstring and wellbore surfaces
- Can support lower rotary torque and pulling drag
- May reduce wear on drilling tools and tubular components
- Designed for dispersion in water-based systems
- Can be optimized for freshwater, saline and inhibitive mud formulations
- Fatty acid ester chemistry with a low-volatility profile
How SP WBM Lube works
SP WBM Lube combines a proprietary fatty acid methyl ester blend with nonionic surface-active agents and lubricity enhancers. The ester phase establishes a lubricating film on metal and formation-contact surfaces. The nonionic system disperses the lubricant through the water-based mud, while the co-emulsifying and water-phase components support wetting, distribution and friction reduction. Antioxidant, cold-flow and foam-control additives help maintain storage and handling performance.
Provisional specification based on formulation
Property | Provisional value | Release basis |
Appearance | Clear to slightly hazy amber liquid | Visual |
Density at 30°C | 0.88–0.93 g/mL | Batch test |
Kinematic viscosity at 40°C | 6–18 cSt | Batch test |
Acid value | Maximum 1.0 mg KOH/g | Batch test |
Moisture | Maximum 0.50 percent by mass | Batch test |
Flash point | Minimum 120°C | Batch test |
Pour point | Report; development target maximum +5°C | Grade confirmation |
Water dispersibility | Uniform milky dispersion with no immediate free-oil layer at recommended dosage | Application test |
Foaming tendency | Low and without persistent foam | Application test |
These values are ingredient-based provisional limits for pilot development. The guaranteed sales specification will be fixed only after representative production batches and application testing.
Initial use guidance
Evaluation dosage | Purpose |
0.5 percent v/v | Initial compatibility and foam screening |
1.0 percent v/v | Standard lubricity comparison |
2.0 percent v/v | Elevated torque and drag conditions |
3.0 percent v/v | High-demand screening subject to rheology checks |
The optimum dosage must be established using the customer’s actual base mud. Lubricity, rheology, filtration, foaming and thermal-aging results should be compared before and after treatment.
